Prosody And Music In Baby's Development: The Importance Of The Holding Environment And Handling

In this study, we investigate the role of the holding environment in early initial prosody, establishing a dialogue between Psycholinguistics and Music. Our aim is to investigate the relationship between this space and child-directed speech, inserting the entire discussion within the transdisciplinary paradigm of Complex Adaptive Systems (THELEN; SMITH, 1994; MORIN, 2011). For this, we analyzed experimental data of perception of musical intervals by caregivers as well as naturalistic data of singing and speech of two children and their caregivers. Two hypotheses are verified throughout the analysis, the first highlights the importance of the holding environment and handling in the baby's initial development and its relationship with music and language; the second proposes an approximation between the child's initial linguistic and singing data. After analyzing the data, both hypotheses were confirmed, although it is still necessary to analyze more naturalistic data to strengthen the first one. Thus, our results show that non-dissonant music characterizes children's musicality in caregivers’ view, holding environment and handling can be understood as chaotic attractors in child development and there is no acoustic evidence that distances singing from children’s initial speech. This study addresses Winnicott’s holding and handling which are two aspects of great relevance in the relationship between mother/caregiver and baby. In these interactions, we discuss the Complex Adaptive System theory and how they relate to the Winnicott’s concept. We present discussions concerning the importance of musical stimulation since the baby’s uterine life as well as we propose a relationship between music and prosody and how these two areas have a strong connection. In this study, we report a multidisciplinar model which dialogues with different areas of knowledge, without considering one more relevant than the other.
