Verb to arrive; Periphrasis; LFCU; ConstructionsResumo
In this research work, we aim to analyze the process of linguistic change of the verb to arrive in the Portuguese language spoken in Brazil, with regard to the V1 position, within periphrastic structures of the type [Varriv (x) + V2]. For this, we expose the steps and reflections carried out on the phenomenon of variation and linguistic change of the verb to arrive in the Portuguese language, in order to carry out the analysis on the verbal category based on the focus on the instantiation of the linguistic constructions of the language in effective use. In this direction, we start from the fundamental concepts that head contemporary Linguistic Functionalism (Traugott; Trousdale, 2013; Croft, 2001; Goldberg 1995, 2006; Rosário, 2019; Fillmore, 1975; Lakoff; Johnson, 1980; Langacker, 1991; Bybee, 2016), theoretical contribution that constitutes Usage-Centered Functional Linguistics (LFCU). LFCU outlines the theoretical path of this thesis so that, achieving the proposed objective, we present the constructional scheme of the construction under study, in a synchronic investigation, methodologically anchored in the mixed method (Cunha Lacerda, 2016) and in the results provided by the Antconc Program. Regarding our object of study, we observed, in the corpora of Popular Portuguese and Cult Portuguese of Vitória da Conquista, that, in complex constructions of the type [V1arriv (x) + V2], the movement verb to arrive can indicates, namely: i. Spatial movement from a physical + concrete point x to a physical + concrete point y; ii. Physical/spatial movement from a physical + abstract point x to a physical + abstract point y; iii. Movement with initial physical point marking only; iv. Movement with marking of arrival point, only e, v. Gradation movement up to unexpected limit; vi. (Almost) total abstraction of the movement trace. It is worth highlighting that all the functions found in the corpora selected by us are the result of new semantic and pragmatic uses, which had as their starting point the movement characteristic of the prototypical verb arrive, that is, they are new procedural uses based on the spatial movement of a physical + concrete point x to a physical + concrete point y.
