Reduplication in language development: a proposal based on templates

In this study, we investigate the path and productivity of reduplications in the development of Brazilian Portuguese (BP), in order to verify the influence of language typology as well as the emergence of templates. This study is based on the perspective of Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) (THELEN; SMITH, 1994; LARSEN-FREEMAN; CAMERON, 2008; BAIA, 2013) and the Templatic phonology (VIHMAN; CROFT, 2007) in the analysis of the phenomenon from a holistic perspective, which claims there are variability and instability in the emergence of any open system. We analyse naturalistic data from L.'s case study at the age of 0;11 to 2;8 years. After analyzing the data, we observed that the reduplicated productions follow the bias present in the adult BP typology. However, in relation to the relationship between reduplication and templates, it cannot be used as an answer to the emergence of reduplications, as there was a mismatch between sessions in which reduplications were frequent and the sessions in which there was an operating template.
