DEBUCALIZATION AND PHONOLOGICAL THEORY

ABSTRACT
This paper investigates issues that are related to Debucalization and the Phonological Theory. Debucalization is understood as a phonological process in which a segment is no longer produced in the oral cavity. It is only set on the laryngeal region though. In order to make this investigation viable, different languages were analyzed – Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish dialects and Nhandewa-Guarani – to justify the process relevance over languages in general and to describe phonetic motivations that make the appearance of laryngeal segment possible. Fricative consonants behave in alveolar and post-alveolar positions (and) is investigated through synchronic and diachronic analysis that justifies the processes of variation/change of these segments into a glottal fricative consonant. This process was read based on Autosegmental Phonology, as well as the analysis of the distinctive features; also, former models, such as Structuralism and Generativism, were visited. Geometry of Features model, proposed by Clements and Hume (1995), is the most used in Brazil, but the process of debucalization does not fit this model, because when the feature [continuous] loses its oral cavity node, it cannot be represented on the tree scheme anymore, this way, its geometrical settings does not fit some theory principles. Because of it, the concept of feature [continuous] of consonant and vowel segments, which are defended by the theory, has been discussed, as well as their role on the phonological oppositions of languages. The viability of different autosegmental models is also analyzed - MOHANAN (1983), CLEMENTS (1985), SAGEY (1986), McCARTHY (1988), KAISSE (1992), CLEMENTS AND HUME (1995), HALLE ET alii (2002) – in relation to the process representation: that is an attempt to find a model that best represents it. Following this track, it was possible to notice the existence of problems on theoretical definitions which make the models insufficient when it comes to debucalization.
