ACOUSTICAL ANALYSIS OF NASAL AND NASALIZED VOWELS OF THE PORTUGUESE OF BRAZIL AND THEIR PHONETIC-PHONOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS

ABSTRACT
This study aimed to present an acoustic analysis of oral, nasal and nasalized vowels in Brazilian Portuguese, dialect of Vitória da Conquista, in southwestern Bahia, comparing them to each other in three stages of their production: the initial portion, the medial portion and the final portion. The acoustic parameters considered were the first three oral formants (F1, F2 and F3), the formants and nasal antiformants, the nasal murmur and the duration. From this analysis, it was proposed to show some phonological inferences about the nasal vowel, whose nature is widely debated both in Phonetics and in Phonology. The results showed that the vowels /aN/ and [ɐ̃] are more likely to nasalize than the vowels /iN/, [ĩ], /uN/ and [ũ]. The nasal formants and the antiformants tend to be present from the beginning of the production of the vowel. With respect to nasal murmur, it was found that its emergence depends on the mode of articulation of the consonant which starts the syllable adjacent to the nasal vowel. About the duration, this study confirms that the nasal vowels tend to have longer duration when preceding a syllable beginning with a stop consonant than their corresponding oral and nasalized vowels. Regarding the difference between nasal vowels and nasalized ones, it is noticed that it involves much more an issue of the position occupied by these sounds in the language system and the relations between the parts of this system than features acoustic-articulatory features intrinsic to them.
