Abstract

In Brazilian Portuguese, the connection among the notions of adverb, aspect, and iteration was carried out on functionalist proposals. In the field of Cognitive Linguistics, although a categorization such as adverb of aspect, and, more specifically, adverb of repetition/reiteration aspect has not been explained yet, the notions of adverb, aspect, and iteration/repetition, that we believe are prerequisites for the construction of this specific category of adverbs, has already been explained.  Thus, in this research, we discuss, based on Cognitive Grammar's considerations about adverb, aspect, and iterativity, the postulation and functioning of the category adverb of repetition/reiteration aspect. To that end, we collect 60 (sixty) video-recorded occurrences from 4 (four) adverbs of repetition/reiteration aspect formed by the name “times” (vezes), namely: “many times”, “several times”, “sometimes”, and “a few times”, stored at Distributed Little Red Hen Lab, and YouTube. We carry out the gesture annotation and analysis based on the Linguistic Annotation System for Gestures (LASG), which is incorporated in the Methods of Gesture Analysis (MGA). The theoretical and methodological discussions and the quantitative and qualitative results suggest that is possible to think of a cognitive and multimodal notion of the category “adverb of repetition/reiteration aspect” in speech-gesture integration, from the Cognitive Grammar perspective, attesting our first hypothesis. We also consider that is possible partially attest second hypothesis that the information about the conceptualization of the category “adverb of repetition/reiteration aspect” would be conveyed in the Image Schemas “Scale”, “iteration”, and “cycle” through gestures since the information was conveyed in the Image Schemas “path”,  “iteration , and “cycle”.
