INTERAÇÃO ENTRE SINAL ACÚSTICO E GESTOS NA PRODUÇÃO DE INTERROGATIVAS EM UMA AMOSTRA DO PB, EM DIFERENTES ATITUDES

ABSTRACT
This study is an investigation on the interaction between the acoustic signal and hand and facial gestures in the production of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) interrogative sentences according to different attitudes of the speaker. It is particularly aimed at describing the acoustic and gestural features of those sentences in order to discriminate them based on the speaker’s attitude, as well as to observe whether hand and facial gestures are specific of a certain type. In order to find which gestures are involved in the production of interrogative sentences, and observe whether there is a gestural and acoustic pattern in their occurrence, it was hypothesized that asking different questions causes differences both in the melodic and gestural patterns of those sentences. A gestural analysis was carved out through Elan 4.9.1 (LAUSBERG e SLOETJES, 2009) and an acoustic analysis through Praat 5.2.01 (BOERSMA e WEENINK, 2010) of 306 interrogative sentences from six video interviews available on You Tube (youtube.com). The gestural analysis was based on the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) proposed by Ekman and Friesen (1976) and on Bressem’s (2013) gestural analysis. The analysis of the interrogative sentences was by done following the methodology of the studies of Fónagy (1993), Antunes (2007) e Moraes (2010; 2012). The findings revealed that there was not a specific acoustic parameter and/or a gestural one relating to specific types of questions however the combination of intonation variation and hand and facial movements made the speaker pronounce interrogative sentences more emphatically. It was also verified that facial gestures are more important in the production of interrogative sentences, as speakers might not rely on hand gestures, but they hardly ever avoid facial gestures when asking a question.
