Abstract

ABSTRACT

It is in the field of Cognitive Linguistics, from a theoretical-empirical point of view, that is founded this research proposition. We aimed at analyzing 24 verbal-gestural occurrences of the deictic “here” (“aqui) in audiovisual data, collected from three data Samples (with Brazilian Portuguese data): Sample 1 is composed by 8 (eight) occurrences from TV news broadcasted on Band, Globo and Record, all Brazilian TV channels, stored at the Distributed Little Red Hen Lab; Sample 2 is composed by 8 (eight) occurrences from the TEDx “Happiness is here and now” (“Felicidade é aqui e agora”); and Sample 3 is composed by 8 eight) occurrences form Lula, collected from “Lula’s Deposition to Judge Sérgio Moro” (“Depoimento de Lula a Moro”). Specifically, regarding the Master’s thesis organization, in Chapter 2, presented after the Introduction (Chapter 1), we established a general view of deixis studies, from a traditional, and from cognitive perspectives. In Chapter 3, we discuss the inter-relation between Cognitive Linguistics and Gesture Studies, focusing on hand gestures. We explored, more specifically, the inter-relation between locative deictics and pointing gestures, as the deictic “here” (“aqui”) is the object of analysis on this research. In Chapter 4, we detailed the materials and methods used for collecting the multimodal data. Firstly, we presented the Linguistic Annotation System for Gestures (LASG), and afterwards we applied the Metaphor Identification Guidelines for Gestures (MIG-G) in two illustrative Samples. Finally, in Chapter 5, we described and analyzed the data, according to the procedure described on the previous Chapter. To do so, we have chosen illustrative data from each of the three Analysis Samples. From a quanti-qualitative point of view, we compared: the percentage of Presence x Absence of Metaphors, as well as, the percentage regarding the different Gesture Modes of Representation, and the different Pointing Gestures found on the Analysis Samples. Afterwards, we created radial scales of prototipicity, in which the more prototypical and less metaphoric occurrences occupy the more central categories on the prototype, and the more metaphoric and less prototypical occurences occupy the more peripherical categories of the prototype. In conclusion, the prototipicity is regarded as a matter of Metaphoricity degree, more or less activated in the real contexts of language use.
