Abstract

ABSTRACT
Several experimental studies about how listeners identify vowel sounds point out that, in addition of the formant frequency, other aspects of the vowel spectrumare important to understand how the vowel discrimination happens. Considering that F0 can be an important information used for perception of the some aspects of the speech, this article proposes to investigate whether the F0 interferes on the perception of the middle vowels innative speakers fromVitória da Conquista - BA. To implement this, a corpus with words composed by high-middle and rounded and non-rounded vowels was set up. Each word was inserted in a sentence to obtain a significant context for the listener. Then, the vowel frequency was manipulated to obtain 25%, 50% e 75% from the original value, for both ascending and descending values. The data point out that manipulation of the vowel frequency affects the vowel perception. The results show that, beyond the formant configuration, other spectral parameters are involved in the perception process of vowel perception.
